OK, here's the story on this unusual collector's item. If you are a Lois McMaster Bujold fan, you know that in the last Miles Vorkosigan book, "Diplomatic Immunity", he and Ekaterin had already been married for a year. "Hey,no fair!" screamed all the readers. "We wanted to go to the wedding!" Everyone should have known Lois had that covered already. The story of the wedding of this and probably several other centuries is titled "Winterfair Gifts", and was scheduled to come out in February of 2003, in the anthology "Irresistible Forces", edited by Catherine Asaro. But circumstances pushed thepublication date back a year...HERE IN THE US. Over in Croatia, the publishing company Algoritam had a contract to put out the translation, and THEY got it done right on time, making it the true first edition. Did a super jobtoo. A nice little paperback in stiff wraps, cover art by Esad T. Ribic, 109 pages. All in Croatian, except the names of the characters. Rare in theUS, highly collectible.

If you love to immerse yourself in a bygone day, this is your kind of book.A charming collection of humorous slice-of-life pieces, but with the center of truth that makes readers relate even 100 years later. The ads for other books at the back are wonderful in themselves, promoting Susan B. Anthony's bio, Bill Nye (NOT the science guy) and James Whitcomb Riley.
Illustrated by 21 b/w plates (one separated) and a few line drawings. The decorative red cloth cover shows some wear and a faded, streaked spine, plusrubbing at the edges. This was a library book in a VERY small town, and some unlucky patron spilled a drink on it, so there is a small amount of dyestaining and lightly rippled page edges to the first 1/4 of the book. Luckily it has more value in the reading enjoyment it contains than in its collectiblity.

It does say the name of the committee came from,"the 50th anniversary of St. Mary's in this church which was celebrated in1981." So this cook book is somewhere in the vicinity of 25 years old. It is 8 1/2 inches high by 5 1/2 inches, and has a plastic comb binding. Thereis some wear at the corners and a few light stains on the covers from kitchen use. One small half inch tear is on the bottom of the front cover near the spine. Inside, besides great all-American recipes are lots of local ads--dozens, so I won't list them all but they include such wonderful names asWormhoudt Lumber, Herbs Herbs, Osco Drug and Happy Joe's. Your Contented Baby is a really funny booklet put out by Carnation back in1943. This means wonderful vintage drawings and photographs of really cutebabies. The text is really fun, too. We sure have come a long way in the last 60 years! Sometimes the authors stop to give a little commercial on howhealthy and safe Carnation Irradiated milk is. Some of the other advice ispretty amusing. Did you know that starting at two weeks you are supposed totake your baby outside for a half hour, and then every day you should gradually extend the time until your baby is spending most of his or her time outside? Most of the advice in here should not be taken, although there is acore of sensible information as well. It's a really fun read and the smallillustrations down the side of each page are charming. In the back are twopages of recipes. It's 36 pages long and bound with staples. The interioris in good shape with slight yellowing to the pages. The paper covers haveslight chips on the edge and some soiling at the corners. The back cover has a major bend in the top corner and a chunk the size of a quarter torn out. Would make a super fun shower gift!

The book haswear at the corners and spine and the dust jacket is liberally scuffed andhas lots of little edge nicks and tears. Sale proceeds go to the Lamar Public Library.

The team was the Greyhounds and the sports pictures are great vintageshots. Lots of photography here of everyday campus life in the 1950's. An Examination of the Problems and Pitfalls of Campus Life. 126 pages The pages are becoming yellow and a little brittle. There is somewear at the spine and corners and the remains of a price tag are on the front. This book has some basis in studies and surveys, but it is not an in depth treatment of the subject. About half the book deals with sex or sex related items--very tame by our current standards but a fascinating look at college in the late 50's and early 60's. The fraternity information is also interesting when contrasted with the current status. There is a place insidewhere the glue is failing, but so far all the pages remain tight.
